Hospice

"When medical science can no longer add more days to life, hospice adds more life to every day."

Hospice is a philosophy of care...a philosophy that everyone has the right to choose how they want to spend their last days.  Hospice recognizes dying as a normal process of living.  We allow the dying process to proceed at a normal and natural pace.  Hospice affirms life and neither hastens nor postpones death.  Hospice is about LIFE, not death...about living life to the fullest.

Sears Methodist Hospice is about the quality of life each of us wants until the day of our death.  At the center of our hospice care is the belief that each of us has the right to travel this final journey in comfort and with diginity and that our families will receive the necessary support to allow us to do so.  The focus is on caring, not curing.  Care is provided in the patient's home, whether he or she resides in a house, hospital, nursing home or long term care community.  We recognize the patient and family as the unit of care and that they are in control of care decisions.  We offer patients not only pain and symptom management, but also emotional and spiritual help as well.

End-of-life care is extremely complex and requires serious medicine.  All Sears Methodist Hospice staff are highly-trained and qualified professionals who provide this comprehensive medical care.  Most of our staff have years of hospice experience.  On call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Sears Methodist Hospice team consists of the patient's primary physician, the Hospice Medical Director, Registered Nurses, staff nurses, social workers, Certified Nurse Aides, Bereavement Coordinators, Volunteer Coordinators, Chaplain, and Volunteers.

Sears Methodist Hospice is a 501(c)(3), non-for-profit organization, providing services to anyone, regardless of ability to pay, religious beliefs, or nationality.  Our patients never receive a bill from us.  With the patient's permission, we will bill Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance.  Memorials and donations help us bridge the gap between what we are reimbursed and what it actually costs to provide our services.

A doctor must certify that, to the best of his/her knowledge, if the illness takes its natural course, the patient has six months or less to live.  However, after six months, patients may be recertified for an unlimited amount of time if they still meet the criteria for their hospice diagnosis.  While patients must have a doctor's referral to enter hospice, the patient, family and friends may initiate the process by contacting us.  Call our office anytime to set up an in-depth consultation explaining our services.
