History Sears Methodist Retirement System, Inc. (SMRS) has a rich heritage of commitment and tradition. Named after two West Texas ranching families, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sears and Mr. and Mrs. John Sears, Sears Methodist Center first opened its doors to 30 residents in 1966 in Abilene, Texas. Today, the Sears System has grown to serve over 2000 residents throughout Texas on thirteen campuses in eight cities, with continued growth on the horizon. Sears Methodist Retirement System, Inc. is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit corporation and is the parent corporation of the Sears system, providing strategic planning and management for all of our operating corporations. The Sears Methodist Retirement System, Inc. operating corporations include: Sears Methodist Centers, Inc. (Abilene) Sears Panhandle Retirement Corporation (Amarillo) Sears Permian Retirement Corporation (Odessa) Odessa Methodist Housing, Inc. (Odessa) Sears Brazos Retirement Corporation (Waco) Sears Plains Retirement Corporation (Lubbock) Sears Tyler Methodist Retirement Corporation (Tyler) Sears Caprock Retirement Corporation (Abilene) Sears Methodist Foundation (Abilene) Senior Dimensions, Inc. (Austin) Sears Methodist Retirement System, Inc. employs over 2000 people throughout the system. The annual operating budget exceeded $90 million in 2007. SMRS provided over $4.3 million in charitable care in 2007, the majority of which was provided to nursing home residents.
